Tortuga Tex and Cypress TreesI’m near Pedernales Falls State Park to see if the bald cypress trees have begun to change color. When they do it is quite a site! Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) are wetland trees and an important part of our bottomland hardwood forests. They have growths called cypress knees that rise from their roots and can be 6 feet tall. Some experts think they help the trees to breathe. Many birds and mammals build nests in cypress trees. Fish and other critters hide from predators and hunt for food around their roots. Timber cutting and flooding by dams have reduced the amount of hardwood forests remaining in the state, leaving many critters without a place to live. But at Pedernales Falls state park there are lots of cypress trees and plenty of trails to see them on. To learn more about our state parks check out the parks information on this web site.
